What is a Belgian Identification Number (BIS)?
Important: A Belgian Identification Number (BIS) is not an entry permit.
A Belgian Identification Number/ BIS number (often called the National Register Number or Rijksregisternummer / Numéro de registre national) is not a visa, not a residence permit, and not proof of legal stay. It is simply a unique personal number that the Belgian authorities assign to every individual once they are identified or registered in Belgium. This number serves as an administrative tool and is used for:
- Tax and social security administration
- Health insurance and medical care
- Employment registration
- Access to public services (e.g., education, pensions, benefits)
Having a Belgian Identification Number does not automatically grant the right to enter, reside, or work in Belgium. Those rights depend on your visa, residence permit, or other legal authorizations issued by the competent authorities. So in short:

❌ It does not prove legal stay in Belgium.
❌ It is not an entry visa.
