What is a Belgian Identification Number (BIS)?

Important: A Belgian Identification Number (BIS) is not an entry permit, visa, or residence authorization.

A Belgian Identification Number, commonly known as a BIS number (BIS-nummer in Dutch and Numéro BIS in French), is a unique identification number issued by Belgian authorities to individuals who need to be identified in Belgium but who are not registered in the Belgian National Register.

A BIS number is part of the Belgian Social Security Identification Number (SSIN) system, also known as INSZ in Dutch and NISS in French.

The SSIN system includes:

  • Rijksregisternummer / Numéro de registre national (National Register Number) – for individuals registered in the Belgian National Register.
  • BIS-nummer / Numéro BIS – for individuals who are not registered in the Belgian National Register but require an identification number for administrative purposes.

A BIS number is an administrative identifier used for purposes such as:

  • Tax and social security administration
  • Health insurance and healthcare administration
  • Employment or student-related registrations
  • Access to certain public and administrative services
  • Pension, benefits, and other official procedures

Having a Belgian BIS number does not automatically grant the right to enter, live, or work in Belgium.

Your right to enter, reside, or work in Belgium depends on separate requirements, such as a visa, residence permit, or other authorization issued by the competent authorities.

In Summary:

✅ A BIS number is an administrative identification number.
❌ It is not a visa.
❌ It is not a residence permit.
❌ It does not confirm legal residence or permission to work in Belgium.
